{"id":464,"date":"2016-10-07T19:10:19","date_gmt":"2016-10-07T23:10:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sewerlid.com\/?p=464"},"modified":"2016-10-08T00:33:04","modified_gmt":"2016-10-08T04:33:04","slug":"two-poems-by-aidan-chafe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sewerlid.com\/index.php\/2016\/10\/07\/two-poems-by-aidan-chafe\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Poems by Aidan Chafe"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Jesus Lizard<\/h1>\n<p>Attempting to catch me<br \/>\nbefore I fall<br \/>\ninto sleep, you query<br \/>\n\u201cDid you know the basilisk<br \/>\nlizard can run on water<br \/>\nlike Jesus?\u201d<br \/>\nFlickering consciousness,<br \/>\nI sink the conversation<br \/>\nwith silence before it sets<br \/>\nsail in this sea of bedsheets,<br \/>\nwondering whether<br \/>\nJesus would have even<br \/>\nbothered if he knew God<br \/>\nwas to divine a lizard in his<br \/>\nimage\u00a0 \u2014suspension of science<br \/>\nto illustrate miracle. A cold-blooded,<br \/>\nbug-eyed sacrilege sprinting<br \/>\nslime-tailed over streams,<br \/>\nrivers and lakes, routinely defying<br \/>\nthe odds with every<br \/>\nsplashy step.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Two Lips<\/h1>\n<p>In the backyard archipelago of pots<br \/>\nyou green-thumb through the day,<br \/>\nmouth wide like a mason jar marvelling<br \/>\nat the flowering delights, making stakes<\/p>\n<p>out of retired badminton racquets,<br \/>\na severed garden hose you arc in-and-out of soil<br \/>\nlike a snake slithering around tiny tomato plants.<\/p>\n<p>I stay indoors watering the pages. Cultivating words.<br \/>\nSummoned only for celebratory occasions:<br \/>\ncutting of first tomato, opening of first snow pea.<\/p>\n<p>On rainy days, I lap up lamentations like a dog,<br \/>\ncoddle you through casualties: slug eyeing unripe tomato,<br \/>\nmildew frothing away precious pea plant.<\/p>\n<p>Twice a year I lend a hand relocating<br \/>\never-growing Christmas tree, domesticate it with you<br \/>\nfor winter, dress it up like a traffic light<br \/>\nbefore parking it back beside its potted friends.<\/p>\n<p>Only in yield, when a release of you triggers me,<br \/>\ndo I tend to garden: a mouth I plant kisses in,<br \/>\na seed from which I see in your eyes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>AIDAN CHAFE<\/strong> is the author of the chapbook <em>Sharpest Tooth<\/em> (Anstruther Press).
