{"id":484,"date":"2016-10-07T19:05:18","date_gmt":"2016-10-07T23:05:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sewerlid.com\/?p=484"},"modified":"2016-10-08T00:36:07","modified_gmt":"2016-10-08T04:36:07","slug":"the-sailor-of-marseille","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sewerlid.com\/index.php\/2016\/10\/07\/the-sailor-of-marseille\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sailor of Marseille"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I know you heard my sleepless tongue<br \/>\nrepeat in sleep how I yearned to rearrange every<br \/>\nwhitecap letter of my name, so I could blacksmith<br \/>\nmy manner into Edmond Dant\u00e8s.<\/p>\n<p>Each letter would spend a year in flame,<br \/>\nthe J into E, the U into D, and bend<br \/>\nfrom the pressure of the finest of tools:<br \/>\na short-bladed narrative and a gilded denouement.<\/p>\n<p>But you misunderstood my desire, and how that<br \/>\npatient fire would need burn for twelve years<br \/>\nunder careful scrutinizing.<\/p>\n<p>So thinking I wanted it easy and<br \/>\nthat I meant to leave, you,<br \/>\nusing only ocean phonemes, rewrote<br \/>\nMonte Cristo as a damned woodcut novella,<br \/>\n<em>The Sailor Of Marseille<\/em>:<br \/>\nEdmond as he was with his first love, M.<br \/>\nand not the suave Count, without.<\/p>\n<p>You gutted the Ch\u00e2teau D\u2019If,<br \/>\nlet forever drown his fortune<br \/>\nRobin-Hooded each inch of growth<br \/>\nbut first like a paper god, malevolent,<br \/>\nslit Faria\u2019s throat:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs it was,<br \/>\nthe priest tunnelled eastward against the sun,<br \/>\narrived too late for light, but with no suicidal<br \/>\nDant\u00e8s to greet and save, a new madman<br \/>\nbravely broke his plate and saved himself from<br \/>\nthe growth of stony hell, that dusted wizened throat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And there, reading, I too felt a pang across my voice, an<br \/>\nAdam\u2019s apple bitten to the core, seeds seeping through<br \/>\nthe pores, heavier than their tiny frames atop a single palm,<br \/>\nas I clutched your damned Sailor of Marseille with the other.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed how the priest bled out in the hole, mouth agape,<br \/>\nresting staunch on his knees, precisely simultaneous to M.<br \/>\non her own, pleasing Edmond the way you thought to please me,<br \/>\nalone, without inspiration but that found in bed.<\/p>\n<p>No surprise you mercilessly broke seven letters off his<br \/>\nlove\u2019s name to leave the only good resemblance<br \/>\nof you to her, that capricious letter M.<\/p>\n<p>O my sleepless writer,<br \/>\nyou were stealing from yourself what was given to her,<br \/>\nfor I learned nothing from that book except of the twisted<br \/>\nedges of your mind, bent like the letters of my new name.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>JUSTIN LAUZON<\/strong> is a writer based in Toronto.
