It is soft but strong enough to<br \/>\nWrite dark history in rice fields, or draw<br \/>\nBlack pictures on rice paper. All in black<br \/>\nAnd white. Unlike the feather from a swan<br \/>\nThat can fly up from an alphabetic epic<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it is a colourless feeling the writer<br \/>\nOr the painter gets, from his inky strokes<\/p>\n<h1>If the Name Is Not Right<\/h1>\n<p>Says Confucius, the speech<br \/>\n<em>Will carry no might<\/em>, or something<br \/>\nTo this effect, but I do not care<\/p>\n<p>Nor will I put up any fight<br \/>\nIf you call me Chink, Chinaman<br \/>\nOriental, Ching Chong, Dog-eater<br \/>\nBruce Lee, Jackie Chan<br \/>\nJeremy Lin, Yao Ming, Ling Ling<br \/>\nEven Jap or Gook while pulling<br \/>\nYour eyes back. Whatever name<\/p>\n<p>You call me, my words do not<br \/>\nGo right, since English is no<br \/>\nMy mother tongue, after all<\/p>\n<h1>We, They<\/h1>\n<p>We come, we see, we conquer, while<br \/>\nThey never seek territorial expansion<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"visibility: hidden;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/span><\/span>We eat meat with forks and knives<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"visibility: hidden;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/span><\/span>They chew grass with bamboo sticks<\/p>\n<p>We believe in God and obey the law<br \/>\nThey practice Confucianism and follow their superman<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"visibility: hidden;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/span><\/span>We discover nuclear energy to make great bombs<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"visibility: hidden;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/span><\/span>They invented gunpowder to celebrate festivals<\/p>\n<p>We punch others with hard fists<br \/>\nThey dance around us with <em>tai chi<\/em> gestures<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"visibility: hidden;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/span><\/span>Our men fuck around everywhere outside our households<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"visibility: hidden;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/span><\/span>Their women lay babies right in our living rooms<\/p>\n<p>We colonize every city with an English syntax<br \/>\nThey decorate each street with Chinese signboards<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"visibility: hidden;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/span><\/span>We deploy aircraft carriers near their waters and coasts<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"visibility: hidden;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/span><\/span>They marry girls to our princes and paupers<\/p>\n<p>We enjoy setting fires and blowing winds along their long walls<br \/>\nThey have Chinese stomachs to digest all insults and injuries<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"visibility: hidden;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/span><\/span>We try every dirty way to overthrow their government<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"visibility: hidden;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/span><\/span>They sell every clean artifact to help our citizens survive<\/p>\n<p>We borrow money from them to build more weapons<br \/>\nThey toil to make more money for our banks<\/p>\n<p>Them<br \/>\nUs<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>YUAN CHANGMING<\/strong>, nine-time Pushcart and author of seven chapbooks, started to learn English at age nineteen and published monographs on translation before leaving China.
