Only<br \/>\nthirty minutes later, the sun gave<br \/>\nthe city a malar rash, like your sister\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>lupus. At Cabaret Voltaire, I played<br \/>\nfootsie with the birth of Dadaism; you<br \/>\ntaught our Dutch companion to say<\/p>\n<p>\u201cmalarkey.\u201d Later on, at the hostel, I<br \/>\nwalked in on her about to use the bath<br \/>\nand left for Copenhagen; the sex museum<\/p>\n<p>and Little Mermaid out of water. She<br \/>\nmust have been the most copied<br \/>\nstatue in the world, like Aphrodite;<br \/>\nanother version of the Swiss Army.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Barcelona<\/h1>\n<p>Beneath promiscuous stars \u2013<br \/>\na sky with more blue periods than<br \/>\nthe rain \u2013 the tapas<br \/>\nof tilapia and sole<br \/>\nbeckon the spring breakers.<br \/>\nThe rats in the alley are inquisitive.<\/p>\n<p>The next day a Semana Santa<br \/>\nprocession moves along the narrow<br \/>\ncobblestone gothic quarter<br \/>\nlike shadows in the daylong sun.<br \/>\nThe shades of siesta persist<br \/>\nin a midnight and crimson slant.<\/p>\n<p>A flamenco in the sonnet-like<br \/>\ndusk gives us all the belladonna<br \/>\nblues. The Sagrada Familia<br \/>\ntowers over the sidewalk and passersby<br \/>\nlike a birthday cake, telling you,<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s easier to keep up with the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The day after the pub crawl,<br \/>\ndrinking espresso and cheap wine<br \/>\nlike chimps, we walk<br \/>\nat Park G\u00fcell and talk about<br \/>\nMadrid among the flaming bells<br \/>\nof spring, the calamity of caladium.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>JAKE SHEFF<\/strong> is a major and pediatrician in the US Air Force.
