Maolalai"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>My natural charm<\/h1>\n<p>here it is and all:<br \/>\nit&#8217;s Friday<br \/>\nand a girl in a shop smiled at me today<br \/>\nbut for some reason<br \/>\nthat charm<br \/>\nwon&#8217;t chase the feeling<br \/>\nof something more. I&#8217;m back<br \/>\nin Dublin again, no more<br \/>\nof Canada, no more smoking outside bars<br \/>\nuntil I get an &#8220;Irish, you&#8217;re Irish?<br \/>\noh my god, I was there once, I<br \/>\nLOVE the Irish&#8221;. now<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll have to rely on<br \/>\nmy natural charm<br \/>\ngod only help me\u2014<\/p>\n<p>there should be a law<br \/>\nthat says<br \/>\nyou can&#8217;t lose the feeling<br \/>\nof having an accent<br \/>\nafter you go home. if that girl in the shop<br \/>\nwho was Irish<br \/>\nspent any time with me<br \/>\nshe would soon<br \/>\nget bored<br \/>\nI feel\u2014I sleep too much,<br \/>\nwatch too much tv,<br \/>\ndrink in the evenings until<br \/>\nmy cheeks are more blushed than the sky,<br \/>\nand earlier,<br \/>\nI look at people too long, enjoy silence too much<br \/>\nand self-pity<br \/>\ntoo often. there should be a law<br \/>\nthat says people can&#8217;t be disappointed<br \/>\nin coming home. the best thing I can imagine<br \/>\nis her going to bed with me once<br \/>\nopening like a book<br \/>\nto someone&#8217;s favourite page<br \/>\nand then going away<br \/>\nand not calling me. my imagination doesn&#8217;t stretch<br \/>\nany longer<br \/>\nto long dates in the park, to conversations about work,<br \/>\nto children,<br \/>\nor anything anymore. I became a child again<br \/>\nwhen I came home. people do.<\/p>\n<p>she still sold me the wine though. a youth<br \/>\ncan laugh. and she would walk home<br \/>\nfeeling foolish about things<br \/>\nthinking about me<br \/>\nbeing clumsy in bed<br \/>\nand about better men<br \/>\nwho know to do more<br \/>\nthan whisper in her ear<br \/>\nin an Irish accent.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>St Patrick\u2019s Day weekend<\/h1>\n<p>my hope <\/p>\n<p>is that something new will come:<br \/>\nsome ring,<br \/>\nsome whirl,<br \/>\nsome whipping fire. my hope<\/p>\n<p>is that spirit<br \/>\nwill spit into life,<br \/>\nthat music will whistle<\/p>\n<p>and pleasant will land,<br \/>\nthat actors will drown in butts<br \/>\nor die onstage. and we will drink wine,<\/p>\n<p>if 2 of us,<br \/>\nor beer<br \/>\nif 3 of us,<br \/>\nor anything<br \/>\nif more come<br \/>\nhopelessly<br \/>\nrapping the windows. my hope<\/p>\n<p>is that thousands will come,<br \/>\nand thousands will,<br \/>\nstumbling over bridges,<br \/>\nbathed in colour,<br \/>\nsmiling with drunk and happy fire.<br \/>\nbut of those thousands<br \/>\nhow many<br \/>\nwill be worth a second to talk to,<br \/>\na second to say something<br \/>\nmaybe worth talking about.<\/p>\n<p>my hope is that it&#8217;s one or two of them,<br \/>\nor maybe 3,<br \/>\nsauntering<br \/>\nlike donkeys<br \/>\nthrough roaring crowds,<br \/>\nfrothing with beer,<br \/>\ndressed<br \/>\ndamn silly<br \/>\nin silly<br \/>\ngreen hats.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>D.S.
